🌿 NASYA Treatment (Ayurvedic Panchakarma Therapy)

Definition:
Nasya is a Panchakarma therapy in which medicated oil, ghee, powder, or herbal juice is administered through the nose.
Since the nose is the gateway to the head (Shiraso Dwaram), it directly acts on the brain, sinuses, sense organs, and neck region.

🔹 Step-by-Step Procedure

1. Purva Karma (Preparation)

  • The patient is made to lie down comfortably.

  • Gentle face, forehead, and neck massage with warm oil (usually sesame or medicated oil).

  • Mild steam (swedana) is given to the face and chest to open channels.

2. Pradhana Karma (Main Procedure)

  • Patient lies on the back with the head tilted slightly backward.

  • Warm medicated oil is instilled into each nostril (2–8 drops as per condition).

  • The patient is asked to inhale gently.

  • Common oils used:

    • Anu Taila – for sinus, migraine, headaches

    • Shadbindu Taila – for sinusitis, rhinitis, hair health

    • Ksheerabala Taila – for neurological conditions, stress

    • Ghee/Herbal juices – for nourishing effects

3. Paschat Karma (Aftercare)

  • Patient should spit out excess oil and mucus from the throat and mouth.

  • Gentle massage on palms, soles, shoulders, and ears.

  • Avoid exposure to cold wind, anger, stress, and heavy food immediately after.

🔹 Duration

  • Usually done daily for 7–14 days depending on the condition.

  • Pratimarsha Nasya (2 drops of oil daily) can be done regularly for maintenance.

  • During fever, cold, cough, indigestion

  • After alcohol, heavy food, or immediately after bath

  • Children below 7 years & elderly above 80 years (except mild Pratimarsha Nasya)
