🌿 Basti Therapy – Ayurvedic Panchakarma Treatment

Basti is one of the five main procedures of Panchakarma (Ayurveda’s detox and rejuvenation therapies). It is considered the most effective treatment for Vata Dosha, which governs movement, the nervous system, and elimination.

Unlike common enemas, Ayurvedic Basti is therapeutic enema using medicated oils, ghee, honey, or herbal decoctions. It not only cleanses the colon but also nourishes tissues, balances doshas, and promotes overall health.

✨Why Basti is Important

  • Colon (Pakvashaya) is the main site of Vata dosha.

  • Since Vata imbalance leads to ~80% of diseases (pain, stiffness, constipation, neurological issues), correcting Vata through Basti has wide therapeutic benefits.

  • Basti is called “Ardha Chikitsa” (half of all treatments in Ayurveda) due to its importance.

🛁 Types of Basti

1. Anuvasana Basti (Oil Enema)

  • Uses medicated oils (like Dhanwantharam Tailam, Ksheerabala Tailam).

  • Provides nourishment, lubrication, and balances dryness.

  • Usually given in small quantity (50–100 ml).

  • Can be repeated daily, especially in weakness, old age, or chronic Vata disorders.

2. Niruha / Asthapana Basti (Decoction Enema)

  • Uses herbal decoctions mixed with ghee, honey, and oil.

  • Cleansing and detoxifying action.

  • Administered in larger quantity (400–800 ml).

  • Generally given on an empty stomach in the morning.

3. Other Types

  • Uttara Basti – for reproductive/urinary system (administered via urethra or vagina).

  • Matra Basti – a mild, nourishing enema (small oil dose, safe for daily use).

  • Yapana Basti – combination of cleansing + nourishing effect.

🔹Procedure

  1. Preparation (Purva Karma)

    • Light diet the previous night.

    • Abhyanga (oil massage) & Swedana (steam) for loosening toxins.

  2. Administration (Pradhana Karma)

    • Patient lies on left side.

    • Medicated oil/decoction is administered rectally using a sterile Basti Yantra (enema instrument).

    • Patient rests until urge for evacuation.

  3. Post-Treatment (Paschat Karma)

    • Light warm food (khichdi, rice gruel).

    • Rest and avoidance of exertion.

🌸 Therapeutic Benefits

  • Corrects constipation, gas, bloating

  • Relieves arthritis, sciatica, back pain, spondylitis

  • Beneficial in neurological disorders (paralysis, Parkinson’s, neuropathy)

  • Improves fertility & reproductive health
