Shiro Abhyanga (शिरो अभ्यंग)

Shiro Abhyanga is a specialized Ayurvedic head massage therapy where warm herbal oils are gently massaged on the head, scalp, neck, and shoulders.
It is a part of Dinacharya (daily regimen) and is considered very beneficial for balancing Vata and Pitta doshas, nourishing hair roots, calming the mind, and promoting overall well-being.

  • Shiro = Head

  • Abhyanga = Oil Massage

🔹 Procedure

  • Preparation

    • Patient sits comfortably in a relaxed posture.

    • Suitable herbal oil is selected according to prakriti (constitution) and health condition.

    • Oil is slightly warmed.

  • Massage

    • Oil applied over scalp, forehead, neck, and shoulders.

    • Gentle but firm strokes in circular motions.

    • Special focus on Marma points (vital energy points) of the head.

  • Duration

    • Usually 20–30 minutes.

  • Post-therapy

    • The oil may be left on the scalp for absorption.

    • A warm towel or mild steam can be given for better penetration.

🔹 Oils Commonly Used

  • Bhringraj Taila – For hair growth & cooling effect

  • Brahmi Taila – For stress, anxiety, and memory improvement

  • Coconut Oil – Cooling, nourishes scalp, prevents dandruff

  • Til (Sesame) Oil – Warming, strengthens roots, balances Vata

  • Amla Oil – Improves hair texture & prevents premature greying

🔹 Contraindications

  • Cold, sinusitis, or fever (may worsen condition)

  • Immediately after meals

  • Severe scalp infections or wounds

  • Allergy to specific oils
