🌿 Abhyanga – Ayurvedic Treatment

Abhyanga is a traditional Ayurvedic full-body oil massage therapy that involves applying warm, medicated herbal oils over the body with specific rhythmic strokes. It is one of the most commonly practiced daily rituals (Dinacharya) in Ayurveda as well as a therapeutic treatment in Panchakarma.

Meaning

  • Abhyanga comes from the Sanskrit words:
    • Abhi = towards

    • Anga = limbs/body
      → “Massaging or anointing the body with oil.”

🛁 How Abhyanga is Done

    • Oil is gently massaged over the head, face, ears, and then the body.

    • Long strokes are used on the limbs and circular strokes on joints and abdomen.

    • Massage follows the direction of blood flow (towards the heart).

  3. Duration

    • Typically lasts 30–60 minutes.

  4. Post-massage

    • The person rests for a while and then takes a warm water bath or steam therapy (Swedana) to aid absorption and detox.

  • Sesame oil – Balances Vata, deeply nourishing.

  • Coconut oil – Cooling, best for Pitta.

  • Mustard oil – Warming, stimulates circulation, used in Kapha conditions.
