Abhyanga is a traditional Ayurvedic full-body oil massage therapy that involves applying warm, medicated herbal oils over the body with specific rhythmic strokes. It is one of the most commonly practiced daily rituals (Dinacharya) in Ayurveda as well as a therapeutic treatment in Panchakarma.
Meaning
Abhyanga comes from the Sanskrit words:
Abhi = towards
Anga = limbs/body → “Massaging or anointing the body with oil.”

Preparation
Medicated oil is selected based on body constitution (Prakriti) and health condition.
Oil is warmed to a comfortable temperature.
Application
Oil is gently massaged over the head, face, ears, and then the body.
Long strokes are used on the limbs and circular strokes on joints and abdomen.
Massage follows the direction of blood flow (towards the heart).
Duration
Typically lasts 30–60 minutes.
Post-massage
The person rests for a while and then takes a warm water bath or steam therapy (Swedana) to aid absorption and detox.
